The design for Parramatta Mission creates a human-scaled sanctuary of healing and support in the heart of Parramatta’s CBD. Inspired by the Mission’s legacy, the site context, and a deep connection to Country, the proposal contrasts with the surrounding high-rises, offering a peaceful retreat for vulnerable individuals and the community. The design honours Parramatta Mission’s long history and values of inclusivity, outreach, and community support. The roof form references the pitched roof of the nearby Leigh Memorial Church, establishing a harmonious relationship between the old and new structures. This integration highlights the Mission’s commitment to serving the community while embracing contemporary design.

A core design element is the meaningful connection to Country. In collaboration with indigenous consultants, the building incorporates Aboriginal cultural values, ensuring respect for the land’s ancestral significance. Natural materials, particularly timber, are used throughout, aligning with sustainability goals and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Timber’s renewable and carbon-storing properties reflect the project’s environmental commitment.

ESD (Environmental Sustainability Design) was a key element in the design planning and organization. The proposal uses fewer resources through mixed- mode ventilation and natural materials, minimizing the need for air-conditioned spaces. The upper floors feature a naturally ventilated conservatory space, allowing users to experience the changing seasons in a controlled, restorative environment. The design focuses on environmental sustainability, with an emphasis on simplicity, resource efficiency, and the creation of a socially responsible, inclusive space.

The design opens out toward the public realm, creating a generous and accessible threshold for community gathering and support.
