This proposal for The Powerhouse Museum Parramatta was one of 5 multi-disciplinary finalists in an international 2-stage selection process. The scheme reimagines the museum as a civic catalyst - an institution that is as much about public life as it is about collection and display. Historically conceived as protective vaults for precious artefacts, museums today are dynamic, participatory environments that foster dialogue, co-creation and exchange. This project embraces that evolution, proposing a porous cultural precinct that connects knowledge, community and city.

Guided by a long-term vision informed by Indigenous wisdom - acknowledging past, present and future - the design positions the museum as the heart of Parramatta’s riverfront renewal. A generous public realm acts as an open lobby, stitching the river’s edge back into the urban fabric and establishing a new civic focal point. Monumental yet quiet structures lean playfully toward one another, their giant apertures framing views of city and river while drawing visitors into immersive worlds of science, technology and culture.

The Powerhouse Museum has a strong and distinct presence on the Parramatta Riverbank, transforming this space into a new urban hub.A sequence of dynamic urban spaces culminates in River Square - a city-scale event ground that metaphorically pulls the river into the city. The result is a museum for tomorrow: inclusive, networked and outward-looking - feeding the life of the city into the museum, and the life of the museum into the city.
