In late 2025, Senior Associate Daniel Spence had the opportunity to take part in the inaugural Copenhagen Architecture Biennale conference, dramatically titled 'Assemble!'.
With freewheeling multidisciplinary panels on themes such as Construction Pause and Material Ownership, the event adopted an unashamedly bold agenda - positioning itself not as a showcase, but as a forum for exchange.
The conference brought together a wide range of voices and perspectives around some of the most pressing questions facing architecture today, particularly in relation to reuse, resources and the civic role of the discipline. Its emphasis on dialogue and debate offered a valuable counterpoint to more conventional formats, opening up space for critical reflection as well as optimism.

Among the standouts was a tour of Søren Pihlmann’s adaptive reuse of an old factory at Thoravej 29, a project that demonstrated the spatial and material richness that can emerge when working carefully with what already exists.
Daniel also heard from HouseEurope!’s Olaf Grawert on the populist movement behind the Obel Award-winning citizens’ initiative advocating for the politics of reuse.
The experience offered a compelling glimpse into a broader international conversation: one that sees architecture not simply as the production of new objects, but as a practice of transformation, stewardship and exchange.
